Plenary: Juncker’s investment package is almost empty and the Council with its wishful thinking, will drain it completely

papadimoulis_strasbourg_orthiosThe President of the European Parliament, GUE/NGL and SYRIZA MEP, Dimitrios Papadimoulis, spoke today (17.12.2014) at the Plenary of the European Parliament in the presence of the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and the representative of EUs Italian Presidency to the European Council Benedetto Della Ventova, ahead of the Council’s meeting (18.12.2014) and said the following:

«The neoliberal dogma which claims that: ‘unilateral austerity will increase investments’ has been tested, gentlemen of the EU Council and of the European Commission, six years now. And investments have declined by 15%. So we need a shift in policy, with more public resources for development, both by the EU budget and by the Member States.

Mr Juncker, the package you presented to us is almost empty. Only Jesus Christ multiplied the fish and the loaves in the famous miracle – the leverage of 1 to 15 that you are telling us, in these economic conditions, is impossible to be achieved. And this is claimed by almost everyone.

Mr Della Ventova, you are trying with your procrastination and wishful thinking, the almost empty package of Mr. Juncker, to drain it completely. What will be the participation of the member states? According to which criteria? How do you ensure that investments will guarantee sustainable development and will strengthen cohesion? For all of that, you do not tell us anything and I fear that the European Council will only send Christmas wishes».
